Thanksgiving Thankfulness

For the past couple of years, we have done some thankfulness posters where the kids cut out their hands and write what they are thankful for on them and put them on poster board. These are huge and I never have anywhere to display them.  This year, I went for more simplicity. Here is what you need:
1 Mason Jar per child
Colored construction paper
Brown construction paper(I used a brown paper bag)
Markers
Tape
Little hands

instructions:
Trace each child's hand onto 3 different colors of construction paper
Have them cut them out
Tape them to the back of the Mason jar
Cut a circle and a long triangle out of brown paper
Tape the circle to the pointy top of triangle
Have the kids draw eyes and beak( my kids also drew hair and clothes but whatever)
Tape it to the front of the jar
Cut slips of paper and have them write things for which they are thankful.

We plan on reading ours on Thanksgiving day.  I will, then, tape each strip to a piece of paper and keep just the sheets with these on it.
The kids are already talking about making reindeer, elves, and Santa out of their jars for Christmas.  I will keep you posted!

2012 Thankful
I am truly thankful and just because I didn't say it on FB everyday doesn't mean that we weren't being thankful in our home.  For 3 years, we have been doing this Thanksliving exercise.  This covers a myriad of things.  I get a record of my children and for what they are thankful.  They use their hand prints so I can see how they have grown over the years.  We discuss why they are thankful for what they are thankful and share with people who come in our home.  I thought I would share it with you!  I will be covering these clear contact paper to preserve them!

Thanksgiving Acrostic Style

We have been studying reasons why we should be thankful.  This week we learned what an acrostic poem is so naturally I thought it would be great to put the 2 together.  We did!  Each of my students is unique and has his or her own thought processes.  I love to watch them get creative.

Summie's poem 1st grade

Ella's poem 3rd grade

Isabela's poem 5th grade
They are so sweet!  I am thankful for them!

Thankfulness #4

I am thankful this week for so many things!  If you haven't read my post The Hardest Thankgiving check it out!  It is a tale of a Thanksgiving that I thought would be my last.  Here is my list of things for which I am thankful:

1) my in-laws.  They treat me like I am 1 of their kids.  I never feel judged or less than a good daughter with them.  They adore my kids and raised a great son!

2)eBay.  Without it, my kids would have no Christmas.  We have some things on there for sale now and that will be gifts for my family.

3)the hard times!  This may sound weird but I draw closer to God during these times.  He feels like here draws near to me.  Truth is that He never moved, I did!

4)Christian music.  I can listen to it without having to explain things to my small children.  It is just as good if not better than any pop or country music that is out now.

5)my children.  I am so blessed to have 4 beautiful kids.  They are obedient and kind.  They think of others before they think of themselves.  They love my husband and me unconditionally.

6)my salvation.  Without it, I would still be wounded and hurt.  Raw, festering wounds that keep opening and oozing.  Jesus came in and cleansed me.  He cleaned out the wound and put His soothing balm of grace and mercy on it and it was healed.  I am thankful for the day that I asked Him to take up residence in my heart.

7)home schooling my kids.  I am so thankful that God has allowed me to do that.  I can't imagine them in public school.  They are thriving in such a great way!

Are you thanking God today for what He has done for you?  I am thankful for you all!

What's For Supper?

I am terrified that my turkey will turn out like this one(from Google images)
Supper, yes that is what we call dinner in the South.  I wanted to document what is for supper at our house tomorrow on Thankgiving.  I am nervous because I am doing the meal without help from either set of parents this year.  We are having some friends in from our town who have family in Minneapolis.  We get together during the holidays for some food, drink, and board games.  We have even been known to throw in some Wii Just Dance.  This is what we are eating:

Turkey
Dressing muffins(we like crunchy dressing so we make muffins)
1 Sweet potato(my daughter is the only 1 who likes them)
Green bean casserole(my friend is making this)
Mashed Potatoes(also by my friend)
Macaroni and Cheese(my hubby)
Butter beans or field peas
Egg gravy and rice
Pumpkin chiffon pies(thanks to recipe from Housewife Eclectic)
Ice Cream pie(my friend)
Sweet tea
Red wine
Coffee

By Friday, I will be 1000 lbs but it will be worth it!  We are totally carbing it!  I have saved my carbs all week for just this day.  I can't wait!  What are you all eating?  I would like to hear it!

The Hardest Thanksgiving

Turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, bread, sweet potato pie, gravy....all these things make for a great Thanksgiving, right?  But, what if something happened to put a damper on the day?  Could it possibly erase all the blessing and thankfulness?  Yes and no.  Something happened for us that changed our lives forever.  We were never the same!  None of us!  Not 1!

I had been on bed rest for a little more than a month.  Our Sunday school brought us all the fixins for a great Thanksgiving dinner.  I couldn't cook, clean, or even get up(or at least I wasn't supposed to).  After dinner was brought, I got up to eat with my family.  After all, isn't being with your family the most important thing?  Dinner was great and life went on without a hitch.  But later that night, I felt a leak.  Not not from the roof but from the baby.  I had had 3 other babies so I never know when I might pee on myself(admit it you know what I am talking about).  But deep down, I knew that my waters were broken.  That normally is a great thing but you see, I was only 23 weeks 4 days.  So this was not happy news!  I began to pray AND fret!  The leaking continued until Saturday and I was tired of the worrying about it.  I prayed on Saturday that God would make it clear to me whether my waters were broken or not.  Minutes later I got up to go to the bathroom.  My waters gushed all over the floor!  My God had answered my prayers!  You may question that statement but He did!  I had to know 1 way or another and He showed me clearly.  Also, I could have been at risk for infection so this was a blessing in disguise.

I drove myself to the hospital cause it was night and we had no babysitter to watch the other 3 kids.  It was dark with no stars or moon in the sky.  It was snowing lightly.  There was no traffic at midnight on a Saturday so I raced through the night.  A trip that normally takes 40 minutes only took me about 30.  I entered the ER and they were full.  I tried to get someone's attention but they were too busy.  I had been crying out for the life of my baby all the way there.  I even offered God my life for his.

I stood there not getting any human attention but feeling God's calming presence.  After about 20 minutes of standing(there was nowhere to sit), I finally broke in line and told the lady that I had amniotic fluid coursing down my legs.  She looked horrified!  She yelled for orderlies to rush me upstairs to labor and delivery.  I was only 23 weeks so I wasn't even show yet.

As I got upstairs, my doctor asked me where I had been.  I told him what happened downstairs and he was fit to be tied!  He called down and gave the ER staff a good what for.  He then did a test to see if indeed I had broken my waters.  When it came back positive, he looked at me with sorrow in his eyes and said that the test confirmed what I already knew.  He kept saying how sorry he was and then began to explain what would happen over the next few days.

This is what he said:
The baby is too small and won't survive.  This hospital will not even try to save a baby under 25 weeks.  He most likely would not make it 2 more weeks.  I had less than 2 cm of amniotic fluid.  No baby can survive that.  I would give birth within a few days.

I was moved to the maternal fetal medicine department and waited.  My doctor stayed all night until my husband could get there.  I was numb as they hooked up IVs and took my information.  The nurses came in and checked my baby's vital signs.  They patted my hand and tried to comfort me.  They had seen this before.  They knew the outcome.  My doctor prayed with me and when my husband showed up,  with him.  He expressed how sorrowful he was but that just because the baby was small that didn't mean that my previous condition would make delivery any less dangerous(I will talk more about that later).  My husband and I grieved that imminent loss of our child.  The child we had prayed so hard for!  We cried and held hands.  We clung to God and to each other.  We began to pray for a miracle.  We sent out urgent prayer requests for people to pray for God to perform a miracle that would showcase His power and glory.  I resigned myself to His will counting on Him to get us through whatever.  I was thankful to God for allowing me to know my child this long.  23 weeks is longer than some women have.  I was able to feel him move early and we had a special bond already.  I knew that I would see him again in Heaven!  I have that confidence.

That was the hardest thanksgiving I have ever had!  I am writing a weekly post about what happened with this pregnancy.  Don't worry!  God always provides a happy ending but not always in manner we desire.  If we stay inside the bounds of His will, He will make His presence known.

Thankfulness #2

Our kids' Thanksgiving project

I am so thankful and rightly so.  God has given me so much and I am so blessed.  Here are the things for which I am thankful:

1) My hubby has improved with his knee so much.  Last week, he thought he would never walk again(due to pain).  This week, he is getting along nicely.  Still limping but healing.

2) My hubby took the kids to my in-laws for a couple days to give me a much needed break!  He is going on a guys' weekend.

3) I am happy with our Thanksgiving project.  I started this last year.  You can see the beginning of the project here .  I just bought a piece of foam poster board.  I traced each child's hand onto colored paper.  Last year, I chose fall colors.  But, I had a hard time telling which hand was whose.  So this year, I let them choose a color of paper and they traced their hands and cut them out and each day of November, they write down things for which they are thankful.  The back of this poster is the poster from last year.  When we are done this year, I am gonna cover it with clear contact paper and keep this to bring out every year.

4)I am thankful that I am done selling those stamps on eBay.  I got everything mailed out and people seem to be happy.  Yea!

5) I have quite possibly the cutest kids ever!  My hubby and I breed well!

6) I have some great friends who understand my struggles and who share theirs with me.  Amazing that we all have similar issues.

7) VETERANS!!!!  I am thankful for their sacrifice of time and blood and in some cases their lives.  I will do the Veteran walk that we do twice a year in our neighborhood tomorrow.  We take a little token of our appreciation to each one in our neighborhood and say thank you!  I want my children to understand what they did for us so that we can enjoy the life that we have today!

Are you thanking God today?  You should be!  He has done more for us than we can ever imagine.  If you are experiencing trial today and God seems so far away, remember that the trials of this life are God's mercies in disguise!
